'60s silhouettes at Saint Laurent Fall/Winter 2014.

A ’60s silhouette is one of the big trends at Saint Laurent for Fall/Winter 2014.

Autumn is my favorite season. I relish the opportunity to decorate my home with dried corn and pumpkins, and I look upon piles of reddened leaves with fond memories at the forefront of my mind. It represents a new beginning; the beginning of school, the beginning of the holiday season, and the beginning of the cooler months that signal a shift in the trends that dictate our dressing.

Autumn also signifies a much larger beginning in the world of fashion trends. September has long been heralded as the “January of fashion”. September represents a new start, a new approach, and a new season full of opportunities to take more chances with what one wears.

If you have been looking around in stores this summer, you will know that over the past few months fall clothing has begun to replace its summer counterparts. Within the next few weeks, stores will have completely eschewed the clothing of the warm summer months.

And what will take its place? This year the Fall/Winter runways were bursting with trends, each more extravagant than the last. Some of these trends signify a shift in the silhouette that we have become accustomed to, while others call upon our more whimsical side. Lucky for you, I am here to help break down the basics of this autumn’s new slew of trends.

Another of the key trends are bright furs, here seen at J. Mendel for Fall 2014.

Most notably in our journey through trends is the return of the ‘60s silhouette. Now, I am not referring to the loose batiked fabric of past seasons. Rather, I am talking about the short, structured skirts and dresses from designers such as Miu Miu and Valentino, paired with knee high boots and long overcoats. This fresh silhouette is the perfect way to return to responsibilities after a long summer hiatus, without forgoing a feminine edge. Worn for day or night, this silhouette brings to mind the daring glamour and playfulness of past eras.

Perhaps taking a cue from the youthful ‘60s silhouettes marching down the runways, designers have also shown numerous types of playful furs—not real fur, but the fake type–this autumn. And while fur for fall/winter may not seem like a very novel idea, I assure you that this fur has taken on all new properties. Furs this season have been dyed in the colors of the fall to produce beautiful furs in rich colors and patterns, like those at Thakoon and J. Mendel. These furs give off both a luxurious and a whimsical feel to them, making them perfect for autumn.

The final trend that I find to be particularly enticing are the capes, cloaks, and blankets that have been making their ways down runways. Many of these cloaks, like those at Valentino, do not even try to hide their resemblance to that of Little Red Riding Hood. In fact, Dolce and Gabbana go as far as to adorn their cloaks with forest creatures. It is true that this particular trend becomes much trickier than throwing on a candy-colored fur or hiking up your hemline. However, when you stop thinking of these cloaks and capes as something out of a Harry Potter film, and instead, look at them as beautiful and perhaps signature garments to add to your look, the result can be a creative yet elegant shield against the cold months to come.

Fall is nearly upon us, and I for one am extremely excited to dive straight in to the myriad of trends that have been provided. I already have my eye set on a few ‘60s miniskirts to inject some fun into my wardrobe, and the longer I spend looking at them, the more and more I am convinced that a cape is in my future. They seem to have a certain grown up Little Red Riding Hood elegance about them that is undoubtedly necessary to complete my transformation for autumn.

:  From a young age, I’d pour over the pages of my mother’s Vogue, and relish any opportunity to dress up for a special occasion. This infatuation with fashion has followed me to Lewis and Clark College, where I am pursuing a BA in English and Art History. I am extremely excited to intern with Joseph, learning the ins and outs of personal branding and style.  I am also writing 10 blogs, including this one. I am thankful for this unprecedented opportunity, and for the hands on education that I will undoubtedly receive.
